Retail trade

The retail trade sector showed growth in the past years. Today, recruiters are still looking for applicants in various positions in sales, customer service, and management. In spite of the recession, retail is still steady because of the basic needs of man: food, clothes, and others. Healthcare

The healthcare sector showed one of the largest increase in the labor market with 8,180 additional workers only in 2006. This sector is also considered recession-proof because demand for healthcare workers is still strong. With Canada’s aging population, more nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, and caregivers are needed. Furthermore, a shortage of diagnostic imaging professionals, such as X-ray and ultrasound technologists, is also being experienced.

Skilled labor

The demand for skilled labor has been steadily high. Labor markets of the construction sector showed a 41% increase while the utilities sector showed a 33% increase. The greatest increase in year 2006 was in the mining and oil extraction sector at 77%. The same sector, however, has been badly hit by the recent recession, as more and more projects were stopped. Nevertheless, workers in mining and oil extraction are very much optimistic about their future. There are still steady demands for skilled laborers such as carpenters, welders, sheet metal workers, drivers, plumbers, and others.

These sectors showed great growth in 2006 and steady growth during the recession. Job prospects are also good for mathematicians, engineers, and cruise ship workers. Work-from-home programs are also a big hit as companies are streamlining costs.
