Job Outlook in Edmonton

According to Statistics Canada, Edmonton’s unemployment rate was 6.3% in May 2009. The global recession has affected many industries wherein employees were laid-off and employment opportunities declined. Examples of these declining sectors are manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, and financial services. But don't lose hope just yet, there are jobs that showed much demand in 2009.

Engineers

The job outlook for engineers in Edmonton is positive. There is increasing demand for engineers because of the federal government’s commitment to spend billions on major infrastructure projects. The federal government is planning to create more bridges, roads, hospitals, sewer systems, and others.

Engineering skills can also crossover to different sectors. This further increases the demand for engineers who can work in buildings, airplanes, oil companies, and others.

Mathematicians

The job outlook for mathematicians is also very positive. A survey was conducted showing that the top three jobs in 2009 are as mathematician, actuary, and statistician. It was also established that people with mathematical skills will increasingly find jobs with the highest rate of satisfaction.

The positive job outlook for mathematicians is because of the increasing demand in different sectors. Mathematicians can work as astronauts, baseball analysts, climatologists, criminologists, video-game designers, city planners, pyrotechnics experts, and many more.

Healthcare professionals

The healthcare sector is almost unaffected by the recession. Job outlooks are still bright, especially for nurses and doctors.

Another industry that is still expanding its workforce is the automotive sector. Although the demand for workers in the oil and gas sector has declined, there are still job vacancies waiting to be filled. By the third quarter of 2009, 14% of regional employers are planning to hire more people, which will offset those who are looking into cutting back their workforce. Despite the recession, there's still a positive job outlook to rely on.
